About the technology
MariaDB was created by the authors of the original MySQL as a fully open, compatible replacement — moving from MySQL usually needs no code changes at all. Years of independent development brought faster storage engines, better query optimisation and extra features, while it stayed free under an open licence. That is why Wikipedia and many large hosts switched to it: the same reliability, without the risk of the licence terms suddenly changing.
MariaDB is an open-source drop-in replacement for MySQL: the same queries and drivers, but a faster engine and a genuinely free licence with no risk of a vendor changing the terms.
